The Night Watchers. The August 2021 Perseid meteor shower viewed from Smith Rock State Park, OR. These are the 5 meteors I captured while time-lapse shooting waiting for the core to align over Asterix Pass; many more blazed overhead that of course weren't captured by the camera. This scene was over 5 years in the making for me since envisioning the composition. Getting blocked by fire smoke, overcast weather, life timing, etc kept me in a state of "well, mabey next year". It finally came together and I can check it off my Central Oregon milk way compositions list; It's a large list haha.

Down In The Basin. A long exposure shot in the Crooked River basin of Lake Billy Chinook reveals a single car navigating the dark road at night. A spring milky way view aligns up perfectly over the SE facing sky.

A 2018 mid summer milky way rising above the "Homeward Bound" bridge in Bend, OR. Fun fact: I stood in the river for 4 hours that night waiting for the stars to align over the bridge. Squats in the water to stay warm!

Welcome To Earth. An almost 250° south facing view of Middle Sister, South Sister, Broken Top, and Mt. Bachelor as seen from North Sister at night. Bend city lights can be seen on the left, and Portland (~100 miles away) can be seen as a bright glow on the right horizon. Collier, Hayden, and Diller glaciers leave their crevices exposed.

Snoqualmie Pass, WA.

Fire Light At Night. An intensely vibrant south facing view overlooking Snoqualmie Pass, WA. This was shot during a series of large wildfires which filled the sky with smoke. Any light from cars, cities, fires and even stars becomes incredibly potent when viewed through the smoke from a sensitive camera. Seattle city lights ignite the right side of the frame, a mid-summer milky way rises above Mt. Ranier in the background, and the I90 glows while under construction in the dark foreground.

Monkey Punch. A nighttime view looking south from Smith Rock State Park, OR. What looks like a sunset with vibrant colors is actually Terrebonne, and Redmond city lights reflecting heavily on the clouds above.

Steins Pillar, OR.

Pylon In The Night. Photographed in the fall 2018, I got lucky with the ice crystals refracting off the city lights and making neat columns on the left side of the frame. The glowing lights on the horizon are from the city of Prineville. Rock climbing in the dark is apparently really fun!

The Earth swoops us into view of our galactic core over Half Dome, YNP. Photographed in May 2015 at the end of a John Muir Trail thru-hike. A beautiful way to end an epic month in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
